If you want a real good paint job which will last I don't think you have much choice but sandblasting. I have been using it for over 35 years and if you have a good person to do it they will not warp your deck lid or blow holes in your fenders. I have also used some of the sealers such as POR-15 products on a Mustang. These act by sealing the rust from the air and moisture. The surface was as expected, rough and I don't know what you would do to smooth it up for paint. The commercial companies which strip paint and rust by dipping, a chemical strip works well also. I had some problem with this because it gets inside the doors and deck lid where it is difficult to prime and paint. It also leaks over time out of the knurled fender edge or hidden places. THe Chenical rust removers just are not strong enough for hobbiest to use to do the job. One product available at your paint store is RUST-a _CIDE which you brush on, let it dry and paint over it. I have used it over sandblasted metal which was thin and we didn't want to take a chance to going through. The problem again is getting it smooth to paint over. It is used in industry to arrest corroded metal where they then paint over it, not our application. Good Luck, Jim McPherson
