Did you ever order the Judging Standards from MAFCA? on page 4-5 it explains that after about the first 1000 early 1928 "A"s and continuing through March 1929 the welded seam faced forward (both axle housings), on some cars begining November 1928 and until the end of production the weld faced upward, and from March 1929 through March 1930 the weld faced downward on other cars. All the axle housings, except the first 1000 1928s, are interchangeable and it makes very little difference except on a car that you are going to have judged. On none did the seam face backward, intentionally. However, the axle housing are interchageable so if you have a pair that have the welded seams facing forard and put them on the opposite sides they will face backward. They will work just fine in that position, but any experienced restorer will know that they were installed by someone who didn't know the difference. I once helped a friend reverse the housing on a freshly rebuilt differential for a show car because the person who had put it together wasn't paying attention.
