Bill,

Thank you for your insight. The previous owner told me that he recently replaced the front spring with a new one, and without enough experience on this vehicle I thought that the crank bearing plate needed adjustment for the crank to be inline with the crank pulley. I did not know about the notches, and did not see anything in my books about them, nor what would/could happen if I were to loosen the u-bolts. I will plan on rebuilding the starter. The battery is almost new, and has a good charge, and when the starter works, it cranks strong. I have already cleaned almost every connection on the vehicle, starting with the battery, the battery ground and starter switch (inside and out) and should have that task complete this evening. From what you’ve written, it sounds to me as though the motor may not be properly aligned with the frame. This was a bit of a surprise, but I was also told that the motor was rebuilt in the recent past, so I will also check to see if the motor is improperly mounted, or loose.
Thanks again for your help. - Glenn
