I need some help! I just bought my 1930 Deluxe Roadster 2 weeks ago. Am having a great time driving it. I was pulling into a restaurant, smelled something like plastic burning and smoke started coming out from under the dash. I stopped, turned off the electrical disconnect. I took off the chrome dash and the nuts on the ammeter had got so hot that they melted the plastic part off the two nuts. My ammeter appeared to have also been fried. I disconnected the ammeter, wrapped the ends in electrical tape and was able to get home. Any idea what happened? Right before it happened, the ammeter needle was bouncing all over the place and also the ammeter never reads over about 5 amps charging but will read 15 amps discharging with the lights on. The car has an 8 volt battery and was restored about 15 years ago. Could the generator cutout have stuck and was overcharging? Could the ammeter have completely grounded out causing the smoke?
Also, thanks for all you who helped me earlier with my problems on overheating and timing. A fellow MOdel A fancier, came out to my house and showed me how to set the timing, points and explained the choke/fuel mixture rod on the dash. I think my problem was burned points that were set to close, slight out of time and running the fuel mixture to lean.
Warmest Regards,
