The shift pattern is this: Across the center from door to door is neutral. Upper left is reverse, lower left is first gear, upper right is second gear, and lower right is third or high gear. To double clutch: when shifting from first to second release the clutch when you get to neutral then press it again before going to second. Do the same when shifting from second to high, release at neutral the press clutch again then go to high. Double clutching is necessary because the gears are not synnchronized as in modern vehicles. Sync. gears did not arrive until the late 50s. It is not necessary to rev engine at neutral. Get used to the feel of the gears from one to the other before driving, it only takes a minute until you get the hang of it. Just take your foot off the clutch unless you are using the clutch. Don't "ride" the clutch. It is not a foot rest!
